Title: Improved comfort and endurance. Unlocked higher range
My endurance improved right away. I believe it is because the Wedge design does a great job of distributing the pressure more evenly. I am also more secure in the high range. I'm not sure why range improved, but it feels like I am able to be more efficient with the air and the buzz for some reason. -Asher H.

Title: Wedge 102g Hybrid mouthpiece
I have played Wedge mouthpieces about year and half now. I play novadays only plastic mouthpieces because i have metal allergy. I have several Wedges for tronbone, trumpet ans tuba. Most of them acrylic. Few months ago i bought two hybrid ones for my main axes. For large tenor i purchased 102g hybrid. It was Love from the first sight. It plays like dream and every note is enjoy to play. It is the best 4g sized mouthpiece i have ever played. And i have played many... Works like charm on large bore tenor and euphonium. Love it! -Esapekka L.

Title: 100AL Trombone Mouthpiece
My experience so far has been pretty great - I just played my first full length show with it this past Saturday (2 sets at a bar gig), and I am very pleased. My tone is more focused, the low notes speak more easily, and I had more lip towards the end of the show. I play in a Latin/Funk/Reggae band on a King 4B, so endurance and presence are always on my mind…. -Deborah T.

Title: Great at both ends!
I’ve been playing my euphonium with a brass 104G for a few weeks now, having previously used a Wick Heritage 4ABL for a couple of years, and a Wick Classic 4AL before that. I find the Wedge mouthpiece helps me in the higher register (treble clef top B and C are now much easier to achieve and keep in tune, and top D is coming slowly) but also below the stave from G down to pedal C. I do, however, find that I have to be more accurate hitting the centre of notes from G to G’ otherwise I mis-pitch or fail to start the note cleanly. I got the trombone version of the mouthpiece because it’s closest to my 4AL, but I’m starting to wonder whether a 104E dedicated euphonium mp would be better, so I’m considering getting one in acrylic, partly because it’s half the price of the brass one, but also out of a genuine interest to see what that material is like. I know I could use the Wedge money-back guarantee to swap mouthpieces, but this is expensive as I’m based in the UK, and it would be very difficult to get the £60 of import duty and VAT refunded by HMRC, so bear that in mind. - Kevin B.

Title: Hybrid mouthpiece 100AL Gen2
Easier on the higher notes. Flexibility better. Like the warmer rim. Double Tongue questionable. Still evaluating the mouthpiece. Also deciding on where leaving it patina or having it silver plated. I have recommended your website to a trumpet player I know, who is interested.

Title: Great mouthpiece
I have been a professional tubist for more than 40 years and my only frustration is that the Wedge was not available earlier. This is now my third Wedge mouthpiece and I cannot recommend them highly enough. On all my instruments I find the design really comfortable, enabling me to produce the sound I want in all registers and all styles from orchestral tuba playing through to rock sousaphone. The latest mouthpiece is the 103G for my euphonium which has given me the flexibility and sound I always wanted - far better than anything I have used before. Unfortunately I now need another for my bass trombone...... - Marc E.

Title: Positive experience
The positive experience: 1. The sound of all notes high and low was centered. 2. The high register was played with ease and it was easier playing from low to high and the reverse. 3. Improved intonations on certain notes. 4. The hybrid has a warm sound and my horn responded with better precision. 5. Definite improvement in range and endurance. 6. Thus far, the best mouthpiece for me. - Alfred P.

Title: Play both trumpet and euphonium
Dr Dave suggested the smallest trombone mouthpiece since I double on a trumpet. I play in church with the choir and praise team so I don't need extreme range. I also don't care for the "velvety" euphonium sound the pros seem to prefer. This hybrid mouthpiece sounds great to me, is very comfortable, extended my range a few notes and is a joy to play on. I'm 71, not a pro, but still enjoy the thrill of making music. Now I enjoy it even more, thanks to Dr Dave. -Tommy C.

Title: Best ever!
I’ve tried several Wedge trombone mouthpieces but the 101GS is the best for most venues, at least for me. Many years ago a car accident left me with a small scar on my upper lip. Traditional metal mouthpieces irritated it to the point that I began playing “off center.” This prevented me from accurately hitting the higher registers—necessary in 1st and 2nd parts. The 101GS is very comfortable. As advertised, it reminds me of a Bach 5GB but allows for a solid upper register because of the smaller cup. Even playing constantly for long rehearsals (i.e., band, ensembles) do not tire my lips. And a surprise came in orchestra: the first note I play following those dreaded 39+ measure rests—clean & pure each time. -Grant S.

Title: Spectacular!
This is the first mouthpiece that I’ve ever tried that is very efficient, yet I can also achieve a big, warm round sound with precise articulations. I’ve tried many other mouthpieces where I like the sound, but they are exhausting to play. The Wedge 104G solves this issue. I’m very pleased. -JG

Title:
Unbelievable!
The wedge mouthpiece and experience are collectively unbelievable! I scheduled a face-to-face with the Doc. That session was very enlightening. He gave me a suggestion as to how to trim my mustache to help with playing, which has worked. I received the 98 AL Hybrid. I have played it for about a month or so. The biggest thing for me is it has helped with stamina (lack of fatigue) of my lip. We have two hour practices and my lip doesn’t fatigue quickly now! I would strongly encourage anyone who is considering this purchase - jump! I don’t believe you will regret it at all! -JM

Endurance Helped Immediately
I am an older trombone player with Parkinson's disease who stopped playing because I lost the ability to play the mid range. "The Wedge" helped immediately to help me get the notes to speak again! So I am back to playing again in small group ensembles. Kudos to Dr. Dave's advice and invention. I highly recommend "The Wedge" for older players! - GB

Title: Glad I explored This 100G
This mouthpiece has quickly become very comfortable, meets its claims in terms of upper register control and improved endurance and in addition has added a welcome core to my trombone sound without losing its broad dark character. I took up the Zoom option with Dr Dave, who was clearly interested in helping me find what I wanted, not just in selling me something - no hard sell at all. Although the Wedge is very different, I’m finding that it isn’t an issue when I have to use an ‘ordinary’ mouthpiece on an instrument that won’t fit the Wedge. Very positive experience all round-JT

Title: Hybrid Mouthpieces
I've been using Wedge mouthpieces exclusively for years. The main reason I play them is their tone. Tone defines who I am, it's my bread and butter as a professional trombonist. Comparing any other mouthpiece to the sound of a Wedge can best be likened to going from 2D to 3D: my tone becomes holographic. Of course, I appreciate the comfort of the Wedge too. When I recently checked in with Dr. Dave for some guidance about staying current with my mouthpieces, he suggested I try the Hybrid Wedges. I was immediately converted, by what they do for my sound, and by how they enhance the comfort of my playing. The new Hybrids have, in my opinion, made a great thing even better. -David R

Title: Does everything it claims to
I’m a junior in high school right now and am frequently switching between my small bore, straight trombone for marching band and my large bore, trigger trombone for orchestra. My range and stamina are significantly better on my straight trombone than my other trombone and I’m used to playing the straight trombone right now so I would blow my chops really fast during orchestra and the wedge was a perfect fix for me, it allowed me to access the high register just as easily on my large bore trombone as I can on my straight trombone, I also don’t have many issues with stamina anymore. This mouthpiece does exactly what it is marketed to do and after back to back testing between it and my old Bach 5G, I can confidently say that it provides a noticeable difference that I am extremely grateful for. -Connor W

Title: Better Than the Invention of Sliced Bread!!!
I was having trouble adjusting to doubling on tenor trombone as I have always been a Bass trombonist. With help of Dr Dave, I was able to select the correct mouthpiece to help my situation. From the first time I tried it I was amazed at how I could pop the high notes out with ease. After about a week of using it, I became a firm believer. It is so comfortable on the lips and you don't feel worn out at the end of your rehearsals and gigs. I sit next to a Baritone player in one of the concert bands I'm in. She is up there in age and It was all I could do listen to her leaky buzz tone coming out of her bell. I suggested that she get a consultation with Dr Dave. She did and started using her new Wedge. Her tone is now near normal. Even the band director noticed the improved non leaky sound. She was about to throw in the towel. Now shes going to continue playing thanks to the Wedge. Thanks Dr. Dave -Dean M

Title: Great Product!
Everything was great. Chatting with Dave about my experience, goals, and reasons for getting a mouthpiece was really helpful. I never felt pressured to buy anything, plus the 90 day trial period is extremely appealing. He suggested a couple options, I placed an order, and it arrived very quickly. Great communication throughout the process. This is my second wedge mouthpiece and helps me get exactly the sound/flexibility I desire. Very happy customer! -Ryan R

Title: Great mouthpiece!
First, it was fantastic having a Zoom session with Dr. Dave to discuss my needs. I was worried that I would find the 1.03" inner diameter too wide, but it feels very similar to a standard Bach 4 size, which is what I'm used to. The oval design of the rim is very comfortable, not at all hard to get used to - in fact, it seems to force me to use my embouchure more efficiently! During my first session with this mouthpiece I hit the best high F I've ever played, and it has a beautiful warm, dark sound all the way down to the pedal register. I'm impressed! -Dale S

Title: Worth every penny
l'm just an amateur player, and the Wedge really helped me come back after a long hiatus. It helps train the embouchure to bring the sides of the mouth in towards the center, thus focusing the airstream more effectively without pressure on the top or bottom lip. The 100G specifically is perfect for my small face and mouth. I was thrilled to finally find a smaller diameter like a Bach 6.5 but with a G-cup instead of an AL. I'm getting much crisper attacks in my mid and lower range while not sacrificing a full, dark tone. Best of both worlds! -Ed L

Title: I enjoy playing again
Easy to hear the improvement from the first note. Clearer articulation, handled well. Better slotting and flexibility. I find not 'fighting' or compromising with the equipment, it allows more energy for nuance and creativity. First 2 hour practice unearthed great and open sound, ease, and most of all, excellent dynamics. Endurance is slightly better. It sounds beautiful. It is worth the price, and the best I've played. I'm glad I have this while I'm still a good player and enjoy practicing again. -David W

Title: Fantastic Mouthpiece!
This mouthpiece is great! I switched over to this from a Hammond 12ML and noticed an immediate improvement in my flexibility in both my low and high registers. Admittedly, my tone was slightly brighter on the Wedge when I first began using it, but I believe this to have just been a quirk of switching mouthpieces. It has since returned to normal. Overall, I greatly enjoy this mouthpiece (so much so that I will be getting a second, smaller one for my jazz horn!). I would recommend that anyone with the means to do so try the mouthpiece out for themselves and see if they like it! -Trevor S

Title: Can't tell it's plastic
I play trombone as a secondary instrument fairly often, and needed an upgrade from the mouthpiece I had been using. Because it's not my primary, I opted for the acrylic mouthpiece, and it feels and sounds great. Very comfortable! I recently finished playing a community theatre show, and had a cast member (that also works at a music store) ask me about my mouthpiece because it wasn't metal - he said from the sound he can't tell it's plastic at all. -Dan P

Title: Worked as advertised.
First, the idea you have an interview to discuss the mouthpiece you need and even if you need it was incredible. I had not picked up my trombone in 21 years and while I was doing ok, the range was a struggle. Immediately improved my high notes. I don't have to play top notes but I need more and got it. Like the 90 day policy but liked it even more when I was told if you don't see an improvement in 5 to 8 days let's try another one. It only took a couple days to know it was working. -James W

Title: Show them the curve.
I have 5 Wedge mouthpieces. A 6.5 AL, 5G small shank that I use on my small bore horns. The 101G and a 4G large shank the tI use on my large bore horn. A 3G that I use on my brass trombone. I play the 5G, 101G and 3G almost everyday and enjoy them very much. I do not feel like I am straining to create a sound with them. My accuracy and playing on pitch has improved. I believe I have developed a small vibrator using these mouthpieces. I notice that when I switch back to a traditional design mouthpiece my endurance suffers and I lose control as I continue to play. I recommend all of my Wedge mouthpieces. - Ernie K.

Title: My new go-to mouthpiece!
After reading many reviews I expected to use my mouthpiece (101G Gen 2 Large Shank Trombone) for a few weeks before making a decision; however, it actually felt great after one day. I have had it for over a month now and performed with it on multiple gigs and I must say it is the best mouthpiece I have played on. In addition to its comfort, I have a great sound wit this mouthpiece and, although I wouldn’t say my range has increased, my flexibility within my range has. My endurance is also improved, perhaps due to the comfort level. Definitely a new fan of Wedge mouthpieces! -Michael F

Title: 101G Gen 2 Trombone Mouthpiece – Large Shank "Gold Plated"
This is the 3rd 101G I have ordered, previous I have purchased a delrin and a silver plated. I really like the 101G used on a Conn 88H trbn. If I compare the silver and the gold plated mps only I myself can hear a difference. Reasons for switching is a) skin peel winter period b) I feel the rim better when the mp is gold plated. The latter is (I think) that the gold plating feels warmer, gold has better heat reflection though lower heat conductivity. Both silver and gold plating is high quality. I just sent my 102E euphonium silver plated mp back for gold plating though it is in excellent condition, looks like new. The Wedge mps are high quality mps, highly recommended! -Mans F

Title: Gen 2 101G Trombone Mouthpiece
Overall, I highly recommend everyone tries out the 101G and/or any other Wedge mouthpiece that fits them best. Before receiving this mouthpiece, I played on a Bach Artisan 5GS (25.5 mm cup diameter, same as Bach 5G/5GS). The 5GS tired me out too much, so I wanted to get a mouthpiece that didn’t do so without sacrificing the smaller cup diameter. The 101G accomplished this in a very effective manner. The only concern I had is that I didn’t notice any increase in range, but this issue isn’t enough to warrant a 4 star rating because my high range facilitation was easier. Overall, here’s what I observed when testing the 101G when compared to the Artisan 5GS: - more comfort - better high range execution, but not increase in range - warmer/deeper tone with a bigger sound core, but not projecting as much (as expected with the deeper cup and oval shape) - initially struggled adapting to the rim, but got used to it after 3ish days - the oval shaped rim felt “smaller” to me than the 5GS did, and playing everything below low Bb felt unorthodox for me despite a fuller, more powerful sound on each of those notes. - this might just be me, but the rim itself felt like it locked my embouchure in place more than the 5GS. I personally didn’t like this but it was a minuscule problem. Please keep in mind that I do have an abnormal embouchure, so one with a more “normal” embouchure might not experience all of the things I did. Once again, I would highly advise everyone to try a Wedge! -Grant H

Title: Wedge 101G
I am enjoying my Wedge mouthpiece very much, but my experience seems a little different than some other reviewers'. Because I moved up to a slightly larger piece when I switched to the Wedge, I have not noticed an increase in range or a huge increase in stamina. However, what I like so much about this mouthpiece is that I was able to increase my cup diameter without LOSING range or endurance. I get the broader sound and flexibility benefits of a larger mouthpiece with the feel and control of a smaller one. Also, if you are reading this review right now, you are probably wondering the same thing I was when I first read reviews: how different does the Wedge feel and how long does it take to adjust? For me, the Wedge feels almost no different than the Hammond mouthpiece I was using before - it just feels like a regular, round mouthpiece. So my experience has been that it took almost no time to adjust. -Neil D

Immediately I could adjust to a more comfortable fit between my facial muscles and skeletal contact. Sides of embouchuer could easily come into to hug the mouthpiece and close any air gaps. I play a Conn 88 in a summer-only community band. Though I try to keep my embouchure up fall through spring, I never quite have enough range nor nearly enough lip endurance. From written reviews I figured it was worth a try... the guarantee adds confidence to that decision. No hype. The Wedge is noticeably better for stamina and I think I'm hearing a brighter sound. One catch: It was like giving a 5K runner instant 10K endurance. I quite literally blistered my upper lip by going on too long, too soon. That cost me 10 days mandatory rest. I have to build up a bit more gradually. I started over on Tuesday practice for Thursday's concert. It really was nice to play the whole concert without my lip shutting down in the last 1/3rd. Other than inability to hold the last 3 Fs in the last song, I made it through without compromise. -Ted D.

Title: Very Impressed
I recently bought a 6 1/2 jazz trombone large shank and it is just what I needed. I have several Wedge mouthpieces for both small and large bore instruments and this mouthpiece possesses the typical Wedge traits of excellent production and clean articulation throughout the range. The sound is fairly bright as you’d expect but I find I can also use it in settings where a more mellow tone is required. Very good. -John S.

Title: 98C Small Shank
For the last 20+ years I've played a gold-plated Bach 7C megatone mouthpiece, that I loved. I recently retired and am now playing a great deal more, including a local orchestra. I was really curious about the wedge shape and the hybrid material, so I took the chance. I immediately liked the shape, but it took a few weeks to really appreciate all the differences. Most noticeable after getting used to it is my endurance, which is now dramatically better. At first my high range was about the same, and now it is slightly better. The low end improvements were more pronounced with much stronger sound, and I've added at least a couple of notes in the peddle range. The hybrid material feels soft and warm and provides a better "grip". For me it is very comfortable, although I keep a bottle of water handy because with lots of playing it can start to feel kind of dry. I was already sold on a heavier mouthpiece, so I went with the sound booster and have no regrets on that. I think this 98C a great match for my Bach 16M trombone, and I'm planning to get a large shank 98AL for my Conn 88H. I think it's a great product, and I like having the option to potentially trade for a different (larger?) size in the future. -James S.

Title: Amazing
I absolutely love this mouthpiece! I tend to view claims of improvements with a little bit of scepticism, especially where mouthpieces are concerned. However, the difference was immediate. Range wise I immediatley gained a couple of extra notes but more importantly where my highest notes were only available for a short while, with the wedge I have my range for the full rehearsal. Despite working hard on not using pressure I would find that my embouchure felt pretty beat up at the end of a big rehearsal with my regular mouthpiece. With the wedge even the toughest rehearsal doesn't cause issues. The icing on the cake was that immediately my sound was a little darker and more interesting than before. I've been playing the mouthpiece a while now and I won't be going back to my old mouthpieces. -Robert D.

Title: What an improvement!
First off, I was really impressed at the time that Dr. Dave spent with me on the phone trying to find the right mouthpiece for me based on my playing habits, type of music I play, and type of horn I use - I've been playing for over 30 years and I have never gotten such great service and attention to detail for such an important part of a brass player's tool box. Second, it's clear that he knows what he's talking about because the 98AL Gen2 Hybrid trombone mouthpiece that I bought did real wonders for my endurance - it has nearly doubled! I really wish I had learned about Wedge Mouthpieces sooner. My range saw only a moderate improvement, not nearly as good as my endurance, but being able to reliably hit the high G with less strain still makes this a game changer in my book. I HIGHLY AND EMPHATICALLY recommend looking into Wedge Mouthpieces. -Chris P.

Title: Excellent Small bore tenor mouthpiece
I use this mouthpiece on a 1938 Olds Super. The shank fits just fine, no wobble. There was a bit of an adjustment period where I felt like I was not as flexible and my low range was not as strong. However, that passed after about two weeks and things are as good if not better than they were on my 7C. I have ringing high notes and I can adjust the color of my sound from full to tearing paint off the walls in my low range. The extra heft of this mouthpiece lets me play much louder in my mid range before the sound starts to break up but it still responds at softer dynamics. The best thing about this mouthpiece is that I have an increase in endurance and a reduction in my TMJ issues compared to my 7C. - Chip H.

Title: Good experience with Wedge.
Excellent. I started with a 30-minute zoom meeting with Dr. Dave, which was thoughtful and helpful. His mouthpiece size recommendation surprised me but I was impressed with his concept, system and experience, and decided to go 100% in with his plan. When I first tried the mouthpiece, I knew within 5 seconds that this was going to work for me. I can play well on it, although after a few weeks I think I am still getting used to the slight changes in the corners needed to seal. I also have found the Wedge is more sensitive than I realized to proper vertical orientation, and now have got that working, though I am still looking for the best way to mark the spot where it goes. It does feel and sound bigger than its horizontal (nominal) rim diameter. The subjective feelings of playing a Wedge Hybrid and the musical results are so far very much what Dr. Dave said I could hope for. - John B.

Been needing something brighter for commercial stuff in a 3 piece horn section in a pop band and 2nd bone in a big band. Compliments my old wedge 5g perfectly, really couldn't be happier. Title: Thumbs Up
Was immediately pleased with the performance of this mouthpiece (and sound booster) used with my Baritone horn (British style .504" bore). I have alternated between 7C and 11C mouthpieces that played well except always seemed to impede smooth transition into the lower register. I think the Wedge design along with the larger .240" throat (vs. Bach .230" or .234" Mega Tone) have eliminated this obstacle. I also observed a more full sound emanating from the instrument and I briefly switched back to the old mouthpieces for comparison to confirm it wasn't wishful thinking. The hybrid surface is very comfortable and the warmer sound is pleasant. I believe this will be a welcome attribute as I occasionally play hymns in a small church accompanied by a piano where the brightness of my instrument can become overwhelming. Another benefit is not having to worry about replating down the road. - Ben G.

-Grant S.

-Tommy C.

Title: Great mouthpiece
I think it's my ideal mouthpiece. I have to say that I don't use it for classical music, but in a balkan funk brass band, where I play from f to fffff or sfffffz or smgfzsktxx!! With my dw 12c heritage I found the sound, with this I found also endurance to play very loud and noising metal brass music for long concert. Now I'm free to break my teeth and everybody ears without feeling pain (I think just me). I'm so glad ❤ On the other hand I will buy one also for my large bore trombone. I think that gain potentially more endurance without studying a lot is a great improvement for every brass player. I don't think it give you extra range, but for sure I have to play it a bit more. After 2 weeks I can say I'm more in comfort with high range compared to my denis wick. But no extra ultrasound or something like this. For that maybe you can buy a trumpet... -FRANCESCO S.

When I received my 110G I realized by the sticker on the box that I had been using the 114 wrong and lining up the dots sideways instead of vertically which seemed more intuitive. Playing with the mouthpiece oriented correctly made it even better! The 110G is much better for the higher register and produces a brighter sound that is sometimes needed to blend in with the tenor trombones. Still good slotting in and forgiving . HYbrid 110G Gen 2 with -300" throat and „deeper receiver“ AND comparison with other Wedges I've bought
Instrument: Yamaha Xeno 822g dependent bass trombone I ordered the „deeper receiver“ version because I noticed, that I had to tape the shafts of my other Wedges – they went in almost to the point where it states in the Wedge documentation, one should order the „deeper receiver“, but not quite – turns out this is typical for the Yamaha Xeno 822′s as well as the Xeno 830′s. As soon as I taped the shafts, the slotting and intonation got better. I noticed, that the non-taped „deeper receiver“ hybrid mouthpiece inserted exactly as much as my taped normal-shank Wedges as well as my Yamaha 58L & 59L, so I don′t think I′ll need to replace them with „deep receiver“ versions. But this means, I probably should have bought „deeper receiver“ mouthpieces all along. The first playing impression on the chops with the hybrid was one of comfort, that coming from 8 months of playing exclusively the brass 110g Gen2 with .300“ throat. In fact, I didn’t actively feel the bite as much as with my metal Wedge. But after about 2 minutes, this didn’t bother me. The Wedge documentation, at some point on the website, states, that hybrid rim grips the lips better than brass, thus helping endurance. Well, I did not notice the rim gripping the lips better. In fact, while not sloppily sliding all over, I had no problems with the „shifts“ we bass trombonists employ (together with jaw movements in or out depending upon the extreme register) to facilitate the pedal range or the extreme high range. These shifts work just as well with the hybrid rim as with the brass one. Tone of the hybrid is slightly different than the brass version. Slightly darker, broader, especially when playing loud on the hybrid. Soft playing can actually afford to be a little louder (see below), which helps not to let the notes get unsupported. Slotting is EXCELLENT, better than the metal pieces. Certain „problem“ notes which normally need to be approached with care, simply worked and I put them through the ringer to test them. So this will replace my brass 110g Gen2 with .300“ throat – but see below. After taking a few days to get used to the hybrid, I did comparison tests with, recording them as I went: brass 110g Gen2 with .300“ throat brass 110g Gen2 with .280“ throat brass 108g Gen2 with .300“ throat brass 108g Gen2 with .280“ throat Since I had been using the brass 110g Gen2 with .300“ throat exclusively for the last 8 months or so, I had gotten well used to it. So I was surprised with how great the brass 108g Gen2 with .300“ throat played when I got it out again. The earlier edginess of the tone was actually either not there or easily rounded. In terms of feeling on the chops and blowing, it was like slipping back into an old comfortable slipper when playing the 108. But this reveiw is not about the brass 108g Gen2 with .300“ throat, it’s about the hybrid 110g Gen2 with .300“ throat. The result of these tests is, that I’m switching back to the brass 108g Gen2 with .300“ throat, am keeping the hybrid 110g Gen2 with .300“ for certain circumstances, where I’m playing mostly in a lower register and where I need the endurance to do that long term, like a 3 hour rehearsal. But for normal usage, I’ll likely order the hybrid 108g Gen2 with .300“ throat to replace the brass 108g Gen2 with .300“ throat I’ll be using until I order the hybrid version. IOW – the hybrid offers me great performance, tone, endurance – just need to dial it back a bit on the size. I wish there was a 109 version!!! -Leonard C.

Title:
Initial impressions are positive
I’ve been using the Gen2 hybrid bass trombone mouthpiece for about 3 weeks. It gives a nice warm sound with good “near feel”… can I dare say a la George Roberts? There is perhaps with less forward projection than with a heavy all metal mouthpiece, although the tone modifier may help with this. Surprising how the tone quality is more even throughout the 4 octave range from pedal C to high C. Easier articulation than with metal rim. Have received a few compliments from bone section mates on the sound quality. If you are looking for a new mouthpiece, this is worth checking out. Harrison has a very lenient return policy, but for me, I think this will be a keeper. - Marty

Skeptical
I've tried several mouthpieces over the years, and I always go back to my Bach 1 1/2 G. I love my wedge!! My sound is brighter, I don't overblow, my range is about the same, but I do have more stamina especially in the upper staff+. My buddy likes it too and is planning on getting one too! -Bob H.

Title: S59 Bass Trombone mouthpiece--an educated choice!
After having a "love affair" for so many years, with the "bigger is better" mouthpieces, I discovered the "Wedge" and Dr. Dave! This combination led me to the S59 Wedge. My long search for the sound and clarity I had sought for so long, was finally achieved! The results have drawn many favorable comments from my fellow Trombone players. Thank you, Dr. Dave! -Robert U

Title: Wedge S59
I Have played Wedge 5G on and off many years with my tenor bone. I play more bass bone these days and i have not found satisfying mouthpiece on bass trombone. Mouthpiece safari was always on untill now. I purchaced this S59 because i like this size and Schilke 59 felt quite nice. This mouthpiece immediately give me more flexibility and overall effortless playing. Lower tones speak much better and are easier to articulate. Sound is nice and dark but not toi dark. Now i feel that my mouthpiece safari is over. Only minus is that i have to purchase few more Wedges for side instruments as well... -Esapekka L. Finnish Navy Band

Title: 108G Gen 2 Bass t-bone .300” throat
CAVEAT - this is not to generalise, for example “how this mouthpiece “is”. It’s to state how I responded to it. I had bought several months before the same mouthpiece with the .280”. So I bought this with the larger throat to compare. I will talk about 2 types of “feel” 1) the objective feel of metal on flesh 2) the subjective feel of playing, sound production .280” throat. The objective feeling was “I’m in love”. This feels so good on my lips, at all times. .300” throat. The same objective feeling. No difference 280” throat. The subjective feeling - I felt while playing that the sound on my side of the bell was aggressive, not ugly, but more difficult to subjectively product a “beautiful sound”. Articulations were sharp. Legato was a bit of a struggle. Even with a nice technique, the second, third etc. note simply seemed to produce a pop without my help. Pushing the mouthpiece created a big, but direct sound. I could imagine it working well in a situation when doubling a tuba part with a tuba with a softer sound. It would produce the desired edge to the tuba sound. .300” throat subjective feeling. Better in all areas but still a bit aggressive, more direct than broadly encompassing. I recorded both mouthpieces doing the same things and could not tell the difference between the two, so what I “felt” subjective was NOT what a listener would hear. I felt the .300” throat was more open in the highest and lowest registers. Sometimes I got the feeling, where the .280” might close off, the .300” sang. This was very nice. I did not experience and difference in general range except perhaps a touch better slotting in the single paddle and pedal registers. -Leonard C.

Title: Switched to Hybrid and will never go back
I purchased 2 mouthpieces. A 110 g Gen 2 for my Bass Bone and a 26 D Gen 2 mouthpiece to try and improve my recent attempt at playing Tuba. My main horn is Bass Trombone and I had previously purchased all metal wedge for doubling on my Bach 42bo. It was such a success that I decided to talk to the Doctor about what I should select. I ended up purchasing two Hybrids. One for the Tuba and one for the Bass Bone. My immediate reaction to the Tuba mouthpiece was wow. It was so comfortable from the start. I was used to the metal wedge but when I put my lips on the Hybrid I was amazed. It improved my tone 100%. It was now easier to hit the notes. I had a duel rehearsal today. I played Tuba in the quintet and Bass Bone in a Jazz band. I loved my Doug Yeo Bass Bone mouthpiece but after trying the Hybrid which was just a bit smaller, It made a world of difference. I was still able to hit the lower pedal tones and it improved my upper register. My chops felt great after playing for 6 hours. I highly recommend these Hybrids. -Dean M.

Title: 114D Hybrid
This is exactly what I was looking for in a bass trombone mouthpiece. I like large rims but not large cups. The plastic is extremely comfortable, yet it doesn’t sacrifice sound because it’s built on top of metal. The Wedge rim design really does help range and endurance, and it’s a very efficient mouthpiece due to the cup size and backbore design. I’ve spent a lot of money trying many different bass trombone mouthpieces, but after trying this I don’t want to play anything else. -Jeffrey G.

Title: 110G Gen 2 Bass Trombone Mouthpiece (.300 Throat) vs .280 throat
CAVEAT - this is ONLY to describe how I reacted to the mouthpiece, not “how it is”. I must start with a description of two types of “feeling* 1) objective - how it feels on the face, metal on flesh 2) subjective - how it feels as a playing experience, more from the musical side I bought the same mouthpiece with the .280” throat several months ago. It was good, but I didn’t quite like the feel of the rim. I must add, my real trials with this 110G Gen2 were all done with the Wedge booster ring. More later. .280” objective feel - the rim doesn’t have the same bite as the .280” or .300” 108G Gen 2. It tended to want to slide sporadically on the upper lip. Rather disconcerting. .300” objective feel - still not “as good as” the 108, but much better than the 110 .280”. It stays in place and doesn’t feel much bigger than the 108G .280" subjective. This felt like a bigger sound, but the objective feel simply got in the way. So I wasn’t as thrilled and didn’t trial it as much. .300” subjective. Again mentioning, these trials were done with the Wedge booster ring. I found the slotting to be sublime. Sound was of a larger, darker mouthpiece, similar to the Wedge S59 I had, but I kept my upper register as well as with the 108G both versions which was nice. I felt I could change how the mouthpiece responded to my playing/desires. If I wanted a spritely staccato, I got it. I could immediately switch down to a silky legato and did NOT get a pop of the left edge of the notes. The range was from Hindemith to Bruckner to Mahler and back to Scarlatti. Excellent. Single paddle and pedal resister down to pedal d below pedal b-flat are solid. I did a recording of the 108G .300” throat compared to the 110G .300” throat and could only hear a difference on the legato - the only time my subjective feelings were confirmed for the listener - which was great. I then took off the Wedge Booster and tried again over the period of several days and … the great slotting, especially down low evaporated. the slots got really wide which destroy my intonation down low - started scooping a lot. Not nice. So I put back the Wedge Booster and … all was well again. Terrific moughpiece. The 108G .280” still feels a tad better on the flesh, but this 110G .300” is a really close and very usable 2nd place. -Leonard C.

Title: A Tuba doubler
Love this piece. I’m a tuba doubler fortunate enough to to get a stellar price on a large Edwards bass with Thayers. As awesome as that horn is, it’s not exactly a traditional choice for jazz, which is what the majority of my bass playing is these days. This MP feels very comfortable and familiar to me, with it’s wider rim, but it also does a phenomenal job of brightening and lightening a heavy orchestral bass bone. I get a lot of compliments on the sound with this one. For me, it’s just what the dr. Prescribed, and I find it offers me great flexibility, stability, endurance…all the reasons I love my other Wedge MP’s too. -Ben S

Title: Super comfortable and easy playing
Of course, after 40 years with „regular“ mouthpieces I was skeptical about the wedge shape, but had to try it at least with my new bass trombone. It feels very natural and thus comfortable to play with. Needs to get use to take care about where up is, but after two days you not even longer have to look for the marks any longer...you feel it. Only thing I regret is that I ordered it in Acryl instead of metal. But hey, room for improvement. -Tom W

Title: The perfect mouthpiece
I’ve had my 114XD for three years now. It is the best bass trombone mouthpiece I have ever owned. With this mouthpiece, I have good flexibility without getting tired. It gives me an incredible amount of power in the lower and pedal register, whilst still affording me a very comfortable top register. The size took a while to get used to, but now I have I can’t see me playing any other mouthpiece. -Andrew B

Title: Wonderful mouthpiece in every way
I have played Bass Trombone since high school. I started to get more and more gigs requiring tenor trombone playing lead. The Bass Bone wasn't cutting it and my chops were lets say from an older guy. Being skeptical I met with Dr Dave and and he explained in detail how using a wedge would help me going back and forth between the two horns. After using for one day, I was astounded at how comfortable it was and as I could now pop the high notes. After almost a year of using it, I found that my chops were way less tired at the end of playing and that I was able to sustain my level of playing during those loud and high rock tunes. Have have since been asked if I could double on Tuba. So back to Dave to get an educated recommendation for a new Bass Bone and a Tuba mouthpiece. He really knows his stuff. He has made playing fun again for me. Thanks Dr. Dave -Dean M

Title: Bass Trombone 108 Gen 2
Overall it’s a keeper, but not quite 100%, more like 90%. Nicer sound than my Wedge 1.5G, nicer size than my Wedge S59 (too big). Got a concert in 2 weeks so am not going to mess with another mouthpiece. Good range from f below pedal b-flat up to c above high b-flat (4th space treble clef) What I don’t “like” so much is the rim contour. The rim of the 1.5G “feels” better. I probably will try a 110 2nd gen, which was also recommended and see how that compares. As always, workmanship is top class. -Leonard C

Title: Most Comfortable Mouthpiece
This is the most comfortable mouthpiece I have ever used. I was playing on a 1.5G sized standard mouthpiece. Even after going up to this size, my articulation and range both improved. Range improved on both ends. I can now play just as high on my bass and I can on my tenor. Flexibility is also greatly improved. I had an issue going from low to midrange that i have never been able to work out until now. I play a King Duo Gravis and this mouthpiece works with it perfectly. The other folks in my Big Band have noticed my volume has also increased with no effort on my part. I will likely be buying a 5G version for my tenor if I ever need to play it again. -Andrew A

Title: Amazing mouthpiece, don't want to change back anymore.
I'm very happy with this amazing mouthpiece. The curved shape will take a little time to get used to, but right away you can feel it urges you to play high with little lip pressure against the rim (giving more open high notes), while the low register still plays as it should on this nice vintage Bass Trombone. It tempts me to start practicing more after this silent 2020. I'm confident this Wedge will make it easier for me to play Bass and Tenor on the same large bore instrument with this "110G Gen 2 Bass Trombone Mouthpiece". Due to the requested special Remington shank for my "new" 1961 Conn 72H, I had to wait quite a bit. The 1st one was delivered with a normal Remington shank length, only to find out that Remington shanks also existed in longer version. Without complaints Dr. Dave figured out new specs from my additionally send measurements and sent a complete new piece to the Netherlands (this time I upgraded to gold plated since I already was confident fan of the curved Wedge Rim). P.s. I never realized how much sound difference a properly sized shank would make. This old beauty seems to have been played mostly with a standard shank mouthpiece, so with a wobbly fit due to wrong cone angle. Sound was nice enough, but now much broader (more overtones). Maybe most important is that smoothly starting soft tones and intonation are right away notably easier. What I figured to be a weakened embouchure problem, turned out to be simply caused by wrong shank fit. Very happy with this mouthpiece and the silky feel of its gold plating. Thanks Wedge team !

Title: Bass Trombone
I found a used Wedge 11C on eBay. It was cheap, so I bought it. I found it very comfortable with a good sound. I’m a doubler. I play three horns every day: bass trombone, large bore tenor and small bore tenor. One very surpising thing about the Wege 11c is that I was a monster on pedals. I could play down to a pedal E. So I called up Dr. Dave and decided on a 114D in Delrin for my bass trombone. I also bought a tone adjuster. With the 114D I can get down to pedal E, but it’s a little bit of a stretch. With the Shilke 50, it’s not stretch but the Shilke tone is a little bright for my taste. So, I’m happy with the 114D. I’m planning on buying a Wedge for my large bore tenor. To be continued. PS: three members of my brass quintet have bought Wedges. -Silas Y

Title: 108G Gen2 Bass trombone mouthpiece
My personal experience stems from brain surgery in 2001 that left one side of my face looking like a Bell's Palsy episode, and I was unable to even get a sound out of my horn. The previous 25 years I had played using a Bach 1 1/2 G, but after years of slogging away in the back room and getting some muscle tone in my embouchure, I could once again make some sense out of my sound, but it was still pretty fuzzy. The unique cup-to-rim radius in the horizontal axis of the Harrison 108 G definitely helped me with my attacks, tone production and flexibility. A KEEPER ! -James A

Title: The New Range
On several levels the Wedge is delivering renewed pleasure in practicing and playing the Bass Trombone. Opportunities to "get lower" with ease, broaden the quality of the sound and deliver a stronger "bottom-end" to our Jazz Band Ensemble are happening whilst giving a renewal as a T-Bone player since the early seventies.....with a couple of decades of missed practicing under my belt. Unique in the T Bone section the Bass T just resonates so firmly whilst blending easily as the mouthpiece provides a lot of flexibility to "shape" the music on demand..... Highly recommend it for all levels , especially those of us with lots of tunes in our head and less air in our lungs....it breathes very easy. Thank you Wedgers!! -Michael P

Title: Wedge 114 XD bass trombone mouthpiece
I have spent the last three years searching for the ideal bass trombone mouthpiece. I have bought eight of them and found, out of the 8 ,two very good ones. However, the wedge 114 XD is by far the best of the bunch. It is excellent for endurance, comfort, slotting into the note with good articulation and is great for both the high and low register which is required for the bass trombone and this is very unusual. I highly recommend this mouthpiece and encourage any bass trombone musician to try it. -Glenn B
