Walsh 104E Euphonium Mouthpiece 5 star reviewTitle: this is my 2nd wedgeI purchased my first wedge mouthpiece, a 103E, to use with my Yamaha YEP 642TSII Euphonium on the advice of Dr Dave and my band director who plays a wedge on his trumpet. After playing the mouthpiece for a few days, I noticed my upper range was a bit easier and my endurance was better. I liked the tone and pretty much everything about the mouthpiece except... Note that I said this was my 2nd wedge. My low range suffered a bit and I felt a bit cramped with the 103E so I purchased the Walsh 104E. Prior to either of these wedges, My favorite mouthpiece was a Wick/Mead SM3U Gold mouthpiece and I liked it a lot but as many people do, I'm always looking for something better. The 103E felt closer to the my SM4U which I didn't really like and the new 104E feels closer to the SM3U, which I do like. I thinks it's going to be my favorite mouthpiece as I play it more and become more accustomed to it. My low range came back and my high range is still there so I think the 104E is a keeper. Still has a good tone also. It may not be relative but maybe I should mention I am 72 years old, I play in a community concert band and a community brass band and I am far from a professional player but I get by. I wish I could get the mouthpiece in gold plate but it's pretty expensive anyway so I guess silver is the way to go. -Allen V. I seemed to get more quality volume than my previously solid brass wedge also the tone seemed slightly darker. 2 days after receivinh the hybrid i did a concert with my band. I will not go back to any solid brass m.p -Trevor D. Walsh 104E Euphonium Hybrid Mouthpiece 5 star reviewTitle: 104E Hybrid Mouthpiece Review My overall experience with this mouthpiece is very good. The quality of construction and design is excellent. This mouthpiece is very free blowing on my Adams E3 euphonium. However, as a retired member of a Washington, DC military band I want to have a little more projection to play over larger ensembles, with the open feeling of the 104E rim and cup. So I would like to see a mouthpiece like this with a tighter throat to accommodate the desired sound I'm looking for. I also have a 102E mouthpiece that I absolutely love on my Bach 42B trombone. The Wedge Mouthpiece concept is great. I haven't played on a mouthpiece that makes all aspects of playing effortless in all ranges. I highly recommend Wedge Mouthpieces to anyone that wants to play with a tension free focussed approach. - Bob Powers, Former Principal Euphonium, The U.S. Army Band "Pershing's Own" 101E Euphonium Mouthpiece 5 star reviewTitle: 101E Euphonium mondstuk Het uitproberen van het mondstuk was wat problematisch in het begin,na enkele weken (prima) zowel hoge als lage tonen en wienig moeite om lang te kunnen blazen GEWELDIGE ERVARING - Marinus W. Title: so far so good
The adjustment period was very short, just a few hours playing time. Lip slurs seem to be a lot easier and my upper range seems to be easier. My stamina is better. So far I really like the mouthpiece, the tone is good, but occasionally I think I would like one size larger. I played on SM4U and SM3U before this mouthpiece and I preferred the SM3U but chose this 103E as it fell just between the two. I'll keep playing this one and maybe later try to 104E. Wish I could try all of them. I also have a SM2U that's really nice for some things so ya see, always looking. -Allen V.

Title: The smaller 101E mouthpiece was a pleasant surprise
I was concerned that the smaller mouthpiece might have a negative impact on tone but have been pleasantly surprised: initially tone suffered but after a couple of months of using the 101E it has come back. I feel that my sound is clearer / cleaner and while not a dramatic increase in higher range, there is definitely some increase, and those higher notes sound more natural and less forced. -Dean S

Title: Worthwhile Purchase
I was somewhat sceptical as to whether this mouthpiece would be a worthwhile purchase as was already getting great tone from my SM3MX. The outcome was surprising: almost from the first moment got similar tone but a higher range from the Wedge 103E. Lining up the dot when inserting the mouthpiece wasn’t as bad as anticipated. Would recommend and would have no hesitation purchasing another wedge mouthpiece. -Dean S

Title: No substitute for practice?
I've played euphonium for over fifty years. Professional demands kept me from playing for several years, but I recently able to rejoin a local concert band. My chops were shot, especially in the upper register. They began to come back, thanks in large part to the Remington exercises, but F was about as high as I could go without completely losing my sound. Enter the Wedge mouthpiece. It came out of the box, into my beloved 1975 Besson, and instantly I was lip slurring to high Bb and sounding good. So we all know what Dave means by the Wedge not being a substitute for practice, but in my case, it sort of was. It definitely put me weeks if not months ahead with regard to building my chops back up, and it instantly increased my endurance as well. Finally, using alternate fingerings to tame the notoriously sharp sixth partial slot better with the Wedge. -Benjamin S

Title: Wonderful
I bought the new Wedge mouthpiece for my Hirsbrunner Euphonium after getting good advice from Dr. Dave. I already play a Wedge on my trombone. I again love the sound. Articulation is superb and my endurance especially in the high register is so much better. Thank you! -Christian H

Title: Euphonium 103E
As a 52 year veteran euphonium player and for member of the Marine Band I've owned nearly 100 mouthpieces, some custom made and some not. The Wedge is the only mouthpiece that delivered some immediate improvement in every aspect of my playing. No substitute for practice but practice is definitely more fruitful because of the increased endurance and general ease of playing. Dr. Dave you a mouthpiece genius and get 10 thumbs up from this customer. -Roy H

Title: Well, waddya know…it really does work!
I’m not a professional player by any stretch, but I do enjoy playing the Euphonium in a local concert band. I was a little skeptical at first when I heard about the Wedge mouthpiece. But with a money-back guarantee, I figured I didn’t have anything to lose. So, I purchased the 101E Euphonium Mouthpiece after my consultation with Dr. Dave and wouldn’t you know...it actually has increased my upper range AND reduced lip fatigue! Yes, it wasn’t inexpensive, but I need all the help I can get…and I got it. Nope, I won't be returning this one. Thanks Dr. Dave! -Bob L

Title: Companion mouthpiece to silverplated 102E, medium shank
This mouthpiece is really great, sounds better than expected on my Boosey & Hawkes Imperial euphonium. Bought it for outdoor use and low temperature but will store it in the instrument case if I forget the silver plated one. Same rim comfort as the other MP however the contact, lips to inner rim, is not as prominent as for silver plated MPs which i prefer to have. Since I have no intention to use it every day it will do its work. Highly recommended! -Mans F

Title: Euphonium
Ordered the 101E, a slight bit bigger than my 51D but worked pretty well. Exchanging it for a 100G which is a slight bit smaller than my 51D. Communication and help from Harrison was very good. Can't wait to get the slightly smaller mouthpiece. Will report back when the new one comes in. -Richard J

Title: Embouchure First Aid
Really like what the Wedge does for my playing. I’m 64 and noticed a weakness developing in my bottom lip/jaw area. The Wedge forces me to focus more on keeping the jaw extended thus much less broken tone. One concern was the tone quality. I’ve been playing on a Denis Wick which gives a solid deep voice to low notes without sacrificing the upper register. No problem! Can’t really tell any difference. -Mark F

Title: 101E Euphonium Mouthpiece
I have had extensive dental treatment and have struggled to fine a mouthpiece in which I felt comfortable with in the upper register. I received the 101E and played my Euphonium straight away. The first note I hit was a upper range C. I was amazed and delighted. Goos range and comfortable. No hesitation in recommending the Wedge 101E -Brian L

Title: Baritone horn
I started by playing my normal warm-up exercises and then went on to play other tunes I had played with previous mouthpiece. Found a bit more sustainability in the higher ranges and a bit less for maneuvering in the lower notes. I'm a bit out of shape due to our band's cancellation but the mouthpiece seems to be worthwhile and I judge it a "keeper", -Frank W

Title: Good mouthpiece
I have used the 103E euro shank for about 6 months. My normal mouthpiece has a 103 rim and DR. Dave recommended that I try the 102E. This was too small, I had a lot of trouble in the low register and no high range improvement. I exchanged for a 103E, which is better with regard to the low range, but no real improvement in high range or flexibility as compared with my usual mouthpiece. The fit and finish of the mouthpiece is high quality. But, compared to almost every other mouthpiece that i have, the thickness of the end of the shank is greater. Some people believe that the this thickness should be minimized to achieve a smoother transition from shank to receiver. Not sure how much difference this makes, but just be aware. Also, I would definitely recommend staying at at least the same size as your conventional rim. The horizontal axis of the mouthpiece is smaller than the nominal rim measurement. So, if you order a 103, the axis of the rim that goes along your lip aperture is smaller than 103. Another issue that I have is the rim contour. For me, it is quite sharp and fairly uncomfortable. I wish that various rim contours were offered. The cup depth is between an SM4 Ultra and and SM4X. The throat and backbore are quite large, so the sound lacks a bit or core, but has a pleasant "pillowy" quality. Looking back, I wish i had returned this during the return period. I did not receive any significant improvements in range or endurance. For me, any advantage of the mouthpiece did not justify the shortcomings and the high price. -Mike

Title: Un très bon concept

Title: Companion mp, medium shank, to the 102E I already using
Very pleased with the 102E, large shank, I decided to invest in a medium shank mp for an old B&H Imperial euphonium I use for outdoor playing. So far only used on rehearsals I feel it is as comfortable to play on as the large shank. I am very proud of the sonorous sound it produces and looking forward to next summer season. -Frisk M.

Title: A great mouthpiece
I’ve been playing brass instruments for 45 years some of that time as a professional euphonium player. I purchased a wedge mouthpiece and got on with it straight away. It feels light and provides great lip flexibility. My sound across my range has been complemented by other players of long standing. I played a solo on a recent recording and took the plunge using my wedge mouthpiece after five days of practicing. The CD has been reviewed and my solo was picked out for special mention, thank you Dr Dave for a great mouthpiece, always happy to give feedback and help other players. -Rodney K.

Title: Euphonium mouthpiece for trombone player
Playing both trombone, sackbut and euphonium is a challenge to find a euphonium mouthpiece supporting intonation, range and sound. I have tried many mouthpieces and finally I got this. It is a mouthpiece that really gives me good confidence in the upper register, it is comfortable to play on and the rim grip really fits me. What I have really not got used to is the sound that is more compact then playing on Denis Wick SM mouthpieces, but since I am not a brass band player but playing in wind and symphony orchestras this is not a big problem, for outdoor playing it is even a feature. The mouthpiece also gives you freedom to alter your playing and adapt it is just a matter of practicing and with the extended endurance that this mouthpiece gives it just makes it fun. I am playing on a Adams euphonium but also on a vintage Boosey & Hawkes Imperial, next step for me is to order the same mouthpiece but with medium sized shank. -M Frisk

Title: Love my Wedge 104E Euphonium Mouthpiece
The Wedge 104E is a really good match to my ADAMS E3 euphonium (Sterling Silver bell). The sound is round, mellow and really big. I love the feeling the rim gives me (the 26.4 rim feels a little bit smaller then a SM3U/SM3X but extremely comfortable). I Noticed that flexibility became instantly easier. Benefits of the wedge are for me: - More endurance + Not more actual range, but more usable range (high range with good tone quality) - Increased Flexibility Thanks Wedge for a wonderful product! -Tim M

Title: Great piece!
I find the 102E to be the best match for my vintage Sovereign euphonium. Dr. Dave suggested I try a slightly smaller inner diameter than I would normally play based on my own evaluation of my playing. With the Wedge rim I get the clarity and fantastic flexibility of a smaller mouthpiece, with the extra room and bigger sound provided by the oval shape. There was a bit of an acclimation period for me, but it was worth the wait. Wedge mouthpieces are different, and worth a try in my book! -Jason D.
